If you look at this satellite image of Oakland, what color do you see within our green planting boundaries (the red boundaries are the disadvantaged communities)?
Mostly grey.
Why?
Because only about 25% of Oakland's total area is covered in trees (according to the Oakland Urban Tree Canopy Assessment conducted by American Forests, July 2015) ... and of those 25%, most are not in the Oakland flatlands.
Help us green Oakland and contribute to our urban forest!

If you or somebody you know would like FREE trees planted outside of your home or business, please let us know!
(And if you don't have room along the sidewalk/street, we can even plant in your front or back yard.)
The Oakland Parks & Recreation Foundation has received a grant to fund the "Trees for the Oakland Flatlands" project, transforming concrete into greenspace in the "environmentally disadvantaged community" census-tracts, based on the CalEnviroScreen 2.0 (http://oehha.ca.gov/ej/ces2.html).
(Secondary priority goes to addresses within a half-mile buffer of the Disadvantaged Communities, and third priority to addresses farther away.)
As the new trees grow, they will take in carbon dioxide (CO2), help to combat climate change, and provide a number of social and environmental benefits to the surrounding community:
Use this map to see if your property falls within our free-tree zone: bit.ly/FreeTreesforOaklandFlatlands
If your property is inside the zone -- and even if it is outside the zone, but you have room for a big tree anyway (this is a new policy for fall 2019) -- send us a request form here: www.treesforoaklandflatlands.org/request-a-tree.html
We will need an area at least 3' wide (3'x8', 3.5'x7', 4'x6', 5'x5', etc.) along the sidewalk or in your yard, and no high-voltage wires overhead.
If you don't have space for a new tree of your own, or you live outside Oakland, but you want to join us in planting, please find details on how to volunteer here: http://www.treesforoaklandflatlands.org/volunteer.html
Thanks!

- Improve air quality, reduce asthma
- Reduce stormwater flooding
- Cool the environment
- Reduce emotional stress, improve mental health
- Provide habitat for wildlife
- Add beauty to the landscape

- We visit your property to assess space and location, and to check for underground & overhead utilities
- Then we work with you to choose the best place and appropriate species
- Then we plant the tree with you (if you want to help) or for you!
- We ask that you water the trees weekly for the first 2-3 years until they get established
If you don't have space for a new tree of your own, or you live outside Oakland, but you want to join us in planting, please find details on how to volunteer here: http://www.treesforoaklandflatlands.org/volunteer.html
