Job Title: Tree Care Specialist. Two (2) positions are available as Independent Contractors
Hours and Duration: Part-time: 10-20 hours / week, May to October. You will meet with the Project Coordinator weekly for 1-2 hours, but you will set most of your other working hours.
Pay and Benefits: $20-25 per hour, depending on experience. No benefits. Since you will be working as an Independent Contractor, your pay arrangement is via 1099 and not W-2 forms. Vehicle mileage will be reimbursed.
Project Overview: The mission of Trees for Oakland ("TFO") is to contribute to the Urban Forest in all of Oakland by planting and maintaining trees in the city, with emphasis in areas with limited canopy. TFO and its volunteers have planted nearly 3,000 trees since 2010 on Oakland's streets, parks, and schools. Our largest planting project in 2023 is the Bancroft Avenue Median in East Oakland, between 73th Ave. and 103rd Ave. (30 blocks long.) So far this year, we have planted approximately 70 trees, with plans to plant 30 more in this area. These trees need maintenance and watering, which is a manual process. That is the work we are seeking help for.

- Water trees by hand - some with hoses, some with water container
- Maintenance of trees, including adding mulch / wood chips, trimming branches and cleaning up debris / leaves
- Misc. Tasks assigned daily as needed, assigned by tree planting supervisors
- Housekeeping & inventory of equipment
- Communicate several times a week with Project Coordinator(s) and potentially City of Oakland liaisons
- Maintain records of your activities
- Consult with the Coordinator and forward any questions that you can't answer
- Promote our program (including street tree planting) to community members you may encounter
- Possibly other activities, according to your interests: social media, graphic design, GIS, etc.
Skills required and criteria for hiring:
- Friendly demeanor, good communication skills, attention to detail, self-motivation, and love of trees.
- Must be able to lift 50 pounds
- Must be willing to work at the project site (Bancroft Ave Median - see description above). You do not need a driver's license or your own vehicle, but one may be useful. Vehicle mileage will be reimbursed.
- Safety minded
- Ability to make decisions independently
- Preferred but not required: knowledge of forestry, horticulture, gardening, or landscape architecture.
- Residents of Oakland, especially in the neighborhood of our project, will have priority. We hope people will see you as a member of their community.
